Hogwarts Feast!

posted in: Holidays, Recipes, Uncategorized | 0

For those of you who grew up with the Harry Potter phenomenon you know that the boy wizard’s story is timeless. As we get closer to Halloween and the witching hour you might be looking for a fun Halloween Party idea since not everyone can make it over to Hogwarts for Halloween. Or perhaps your kids started reading the books or they have been watching the movies and you want to do something fun with them! Either way here are a few fun ideas for treats that you can serve at your very own Harry Potter Party along with some fun viewing ideas.

Halloween Pretzel Rods from Our Best Bites

Wizard Wands-

What you need-

  • Long Pretzel sticks (Snyder’s of Hanover work best)
  • White Chocolate Meltys (Can be found at Michael’s or JoAnns)
  • Milk Chocolate Meltys
  • Dark Chocolate Meltys
  • A wide variety of candy, sprinkles and other decorations.

  1. Empty the bags of meltys into microwaveable safe bowls and microwave them at 20 second intervals until the chocolate melts into a proper liquid.
  2. Place the bowls of chocolate along with the candy and pretzels on a clean surface for the kids to start dipping the pretzels and designing their own wands.
  3. Line a cookie tray or baking sheet with parchment paper (no irony there) for the kids to let their wands harden before eating them.

**Note of warning- This activity can get very messy and if the chocolate starts to harden in the bowls just put them in a microwave for another 15-20 seconds.

***If you don’t have a microwave a double boiler works just as well for melting the chocolate.

From Fox News

1 cup light or dark brown sugar
2 tablespoons water
6 tablespoon butter
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon cider vinegar
3/4 cup heavy cream, divided

Once the mixture has cooled, stir in the rum extract.
In a medium bowl, combine 2 tablespoons of the brown sugar mixture and the remaining 1/2 cup of heavy cream. Use an electric mixer to beat until just thickened, but not completely whipped, about 2 to 3 minutes.
To serve, divide the brown sugar mixture between 4 tall glasses (about 1/4 cup for each glass). Add 1/4 cup of cream soda to each glass, then stir to combine. Fill each glass nearly to the top with additional cream soda, then spoon the whipped topping over each.

Fun Halloween Treats!

posted in: Recipes | 0

Happy October!

As the haunted holiday comes closer we have come up with a few tasty, fun and spooky snack/party ideas.

Healthy Haunted

Halloween treats

What you will need:

Chocolate Chips (mini and regular)

Mandarin Oranges/Regular Oranges or Cuties

Step 1- Peel the bananas and cut them in half.

Step 2- Using the chocolate chips make faces on the bananas. Using the mini chips you can make eyes.

The large chocolate chips can be used for mouths or you can use mini chips to make smiling faces for the healthy ghosts.

Step 3- Peel the oranges.

Step 4- Cut the celery into little pieces, about 1-2 inches tall and place them into the center of the oranges to make mini pumpkins.

For a slightly disgusting Halloween treat try making your own…

Jelly worms (perfect for dirt pudding)

What you will need:

Straws with bendy ends

Rubber bands

A tall glass

Jello- Whatever flavor and color you want for your worms.

Step 1- Take the straws and hold them in a bunch. Wrap rubber bands around them in order to keep them in place.

Step 2- Place the straws into the cup or glass.

Step 3- Mix up the Jello you will be using for your worms and pour the Jello into the straws. (Don’t worry about making a mess as long as the Jello fills the straws)

Step 4- Chill the cup with the straws of Jello in the fridge following the normal times for the Jello on the box.

Step 5- Once the Worms have been chilled take the straws out of the glass and gently run warm water over them. The Jello Worms should slide right out.

Make sure the water isn’t too hot or the Jello will just turn back into a liquid.

*** Tips and tricks***

If you mix together different colored jelly you can get that brown color seen in the picture above.

If you want something a little closer to gummy worms use different colors and layer them, letting each color set before you add the next layer of color.

These are great for Dirt Pudding treats!

If those options are too healthy or unnerving for you we also have a third option!

Wicked Witches!

What you need:

Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups

Hershey’s Kisses

Purple, Green or Orange Frosting

Pretzel Sticks

Flat chocolate coated cookies (Thin Mints are great if you have any leftover from the Girl Scouts!)

The Witches Hats-

Step 1: Unwrap the Kisses.

Step 2: Lay out the Chocolate Covered Cookies.

Step 3: Using the frosting make a circle in the center of the cookie. You can either fill in the circle or leave it as an outline

Step 4: Place an unwrapped Kiss on top of the frosting to make the point of the hat.

The Witches Broom-

Step 1: Unwrap each of the Peanut Butter Cups

Step 2: Take a pretzel stick and gently stick it into the bottom of the Peanut Butter Cup.

** Be careful with the Pretzels because if you push too hard they will break off.
